Living with Dialysis

If your kidneys fail, you will require dialysis treatments for the rest of your life unless you are able to receive a kidney transplant. Dialysis life expectancy varies depending on your other medical conditions and how well you adhere to your treatment plan. The average life expectancy on dialysis is 5-10 years, but many patients have survived for 20 or even 30 years. Discuss with your healthcare team how to take care of yourself and stay healthy while on dialysis.

Understanding the Two Types of Dialysis

Hemodialysis

In hemodialysis, a " hemodialyzer " machine is used to clean your blood of waste, extra chemicals, and fluid. For your blood to get to the artificial kidney, the doctor has to make a way through your blood vessels. This can be done with a small operation on your arm or leg.

Peritoneal Dialysis

In this kind of dialysis, your blood is cleaned inside your body. The doctor will do surgery to access your abdomen (belly) using a plastic tube called a catheter. During the treatment, the catheter slowly pumps dialysate into your abdomen, which is called the peritoneal cavity. The blood stays in the arteries and veins that line the inside of your abdomen. Extra fluid and waste products are taken out of your blood and put into the dialysate. Peritoneal dialysis comes in two main forms.
